Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

6:1-81 Genealogies. - We have an account of Levi in this chapter. The priests and Levites were more concerned than any other Israelites, to preserve their descent clear, and to be able to prove it; because all the honours and privileges of their office depended upon their descent. Now, the Spirit of God calls ministers to their work, without any limit as to the families they came from; and then, as now, though believers and ministers may be very useful to the church, none but our great High Priest can make atonement for sin, nor can any be accepted but through his atonement.

Joel. 24

Shaul. 28

Azariah. i.e., whom Jehovah aids; Jah has helped 2:8,38,39 3:12 6:9,10,11,13,14,36 9:11 2Ch 21:2 23:1 Ezr 7:1,3 Ne 3:23,24 7:7 8:7 10:2 12:33 Jer 43:2 Da 1:6,7,11,19 1Ki 4:2 1Ki 4:5 2Ki 15:6,8 2Ch 15:1 21:2 22:6 23:1 26:17,20 28:12 2Ch 29:12 31:10,13

(1) A man of Judah, family of Zerah, house of Ethan, 1 Ch 2:8.
(2) A Levite, family of Kohath, line of Izhar, and an ancestor of Samuel the prohpet and Heman the singer, 1 Ch 6:36; perhaps 2 Ch 29:12.

(3) One of Solomon's officials, son of the high priest Zadok, and brother of Ahimaaz, 1 Ki 4:2.

(4) Grandson of Zadok and son of Ahimaaz, in the line of high-priestly succession, 1 Ch 6:9.

(5) Son of Nathan, and hence probably Solomon's nephew (2 Sa 5:14), who was over Solomon's twelve tax-collectors, 1 Ki 4:5.

(6) A prophet, son of Obed, who encouraged king Asa to persevere in national religious reformation. 2Ch 15:1-8

(7) Two sons of king Jehoshaphat, 2 Ch 21:2. The recurrence of the same name in the family is surprising. It may be due to an early corruption of the text; or, if the text is correct, to a difference of mother, the two boys being half-brothers (Compare the Herods). It cannot be explained by the theory that the younger was named after a deceased elder brother, for the two seem to have been alive together and to have been put to death at the same time (Davis).

(8) A man of Judah, family of Hezron, house of Jerahmeel, 1 Ch 2:38, 39. His grandfather was Obed (1 Ch 2:38); hence he was perhaps the captain Azariah, son of Obed, who assisted in overthrowing Athaliah and placing Joash on the throne, 2 Ch 23:1.

(9) Another captain, son of Jeroham, who aided in overthrowing Athaliah, 2 Ch 23:1.

(10) A prince of Ephraim, son of Johanan, who aided in persuading the soldiers of Pekah's army to release the captives of Judah, 2 Ch 28:12.

(11) A king of Judah, called also Uzziah (B.C. 811-759), 2 Ch 22:6; 23:1. 2Ki 14:21 15:1 *Compare with 2Ch 26:1

(12) A high priest, 1 Ch 6:10; probably he who rebuked Uzziah for encroaching on the priest's office. 2Ch 26:17-20

(13) A high priest during Hezekiah's reign, possibly the same as (12), 2 Ch 31:10, 13.

(14) A Levite, family of Merari, who assisted in purifying the temple in Hezekiah's reign, 2 Ch 29:12.

(15) A high priest, son of Hilkiah and father of Seraiah, not long before the exile, 1 Ch 6:13, 14; perphaps 9:11.

(16) A son of Hoshaiah and an opponent of the prophet Jeremiah. Jer 43:2

(17) The Hebrew and original name of Abednego, Da 1:7.
(18) Grandfather of Ezra, Ezr 7:1.
(19) A prominent person, probably prince of Judah, who marched in the procession at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem. Ne 12:32,33

(20) A son of Maaseiah, who had a house at Jerusalem in Nehemiah's time, and repaired the wall in its immediate vicinity. Ne 3:23,24

(21) A priest, doubtless head of a father's house, who in the days of Nehemiah sealed the covenant to keep separate from foreigners and observe the law of God, Ne 10:2.

(22) A descendant of Hilkiah who was ruler of the house of God after the exile, 1 Ch 9:11; see however, Seraiah. Ne 11:11

(23) A king of Israel (not Uzziah), called Azariah in which is given in the next verse, 2 Ch 22:6, 7; 2Ch 22:7 *compare 2Ki 8:29 *(adapted from Davis Dictionary of the Bible, pp: 66, 67.

Zephaniah. Zep 1:1 While it is sufficiently evident that many of the variations of the names of persons have arisen from the carelessness of transcribers, or the inattention of translators, and others from a difference (probably dialectical) in the pronunciation (Jud 12:6; 2 Ki 8:21); it is also evident, that the same persons, as in these instances, must have had two or more totally distinct names.

Shaul, Uzziah, Uriel. ver. 24.
