Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

12. He says this, lest the sinner should abuse the statement (Ec 7:15), "A wicked man prolongeth his life."

before him-literally, "at His presence"; reverently serve Him, realizing His continual presence.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

8:9-13 Solomon observed, that many a time one man rules over another to his hurt, and that prosperity hardens them in their wickedness. Sinners herein deceive themselves. Vengeance comes slowly, but it comes surely. A good man's days have some substance; he lives to a good purpose: a wicked man's days are all as a shadow, empty and worthless. Let us pray that we may view eternal things as near, real, and all-important.

Deuteronomy 4:40 "So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time."
Deuteronomy 12:25 "You shall not eat it, so that it may be well with you and your sons after you, for you will be doing what is right in the sight of the LORD.
Psalm 37:11 But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
Proverbs 1:33 "But he who listens to me shall live securely And will be at ease from the dread of evil."
Ecclesiastes 7:15 I have seen everything during my lifetime of futility; there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his wickedness.
Isaiah 3:10 Say to the righteous that it will go well with them, For they will eat the fruit of their actions. (NASB ©1995)
