Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

25-28. Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money-This private generosity was not an infringement of his duty-a defrauding of the revenue. He would have a discretionary power-he was daily enriching the king's exchequer-and he might have paid the sum from his own purse.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

42:25-28 The brethren came for corn, and corn they had: not only so, but every man had his money given back. Thus Christ, like Joseph, gives out supplies without money and without price. The poorest are invited to buy. But guilty consciences are apt to take good providences in a bad sense; to put wrong meanings even upon things that make for them.

Genesis 44:1 Then he commanded his house steward, saying, "Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack.
Romans 12:17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Romans 12:20 "BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD."
1 Peter 3:9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. (NASB ©1995)
