People's New Testament

17:2 He was transfigured before them. That is, transformed, changed in form. The great object was to reveal to the disciples his Divine glory before they beheld his humiliation upon the cross, in order to sustain their faith in the hour of trial.

His face did shine as the sun. Thus John describes the glorified Savior when he beheld him on Patmos: His face as the sun when he shineth in his strength (Re 1:16).

His raiment was white as the light. Mark says, white as snow (Mr 9:3). The comparison may have been suggested by the snow of Hermon. It was a vision of supernatural splendor.

Wesley's Notes

17:2 And was transfigured - Or transformed. The indwelling Deity darted out its rays through the veil of the flesh; and that with such transcendent splendour, that he no longer bore the form of a servant. His face shone with Divine majesty, like the sun in its strength; and all his body was so irradiated by it, that his clothes could not conceal its glory, but became white and glittering as the very light, with which he covered himself as with a garment.

Scofield Reference Notes

[3] was transfigured

The transfiguration scene contains, in miniature, all the elements of the future kingdom in manifestation:

(1) the Lord, not in humiliation, but in glory (v. 2).

(2) Moses, glorified, representative of the redeemed who have passed through death into the kingdom. Mt 13:43 Lk 9:30,31.

(3) Elijah, glorified, representative of the redeemed who have entered the kingdom by translation. 1Cor 15:50-53 1Th 4:14-17.

(4) Peter, James, and John, not glorified, representatives (for the moment) of Israel in the flesh in the future kingdom Ezek 37:21-27.

(5) The multitude at the foot of the mountain Mt 17:2, representative of the nations who are to be brought into the kingdom after it is established over Israel Isa 11:10-12, etc.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

17:1-13 Now the disciples beheld somewhat of Christ's glory, as of the only begotten of the Father. It was intended to support their faith, when they would have to witness his crucifixion; and would give them an idea of the glory prepared for them, when changed by his power and made like him. The apostles were overcome by the glorious sight. Peter thought that it was most desirable to continue there, and to go no more down to meet the sufferings of which he was so unwilling to hear. In this he knew not what he said. We are wrong, if we look for a heaven here upon earth. Whatever tabernacles we propose to make for ourselves in this world, we must always remember to ask Christ's leave. That sacrifice was not yet offered, without which the souls of sinful men could not have been saved; and important services were to be done by Peter and his brethren. While Peter spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, an emblem of the Divine presence and glory. Ever since man sinned, and heard God's voice in the garden, unusual appearances of God have been terrible to man. They fell prostrate to the earth, till Jesus encouraged them; when looking round, they beheld only their Lord as they commonly saw him. We must pass through varied experiences in our way to glory; and when we return to the world after an ordinance, it must be our care to take Christ with us, and then it may be our comfort that he is with us.

Matthew 17:1 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
