People's New Testament

16:23 Gaius, mine host. Paul baptized a Gaius at Corinth (1Co 1:14). The name occurs several times. He was noted for his hospitality.

Erastus the chamberlain. The city treasurer, hence a man of high position. The name occurs in Ac 19:22 2Ti 4:20.

Wesley's Notes

16:23 The chamberlain of the city - Of Corinth.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

23. Gaius mine host, and-the host

of the whole church-(See Ac 20:4). It would appear that he was one of only two persons whom Paul baptized with his own hand (compare 3Jo 1). His Christian hospitality appears to have been something uncommon.

Erastus the chamberlain-"treasurer."

of the city-doubtless of Corinth. (See Ac 19:22; 2Ti 4:20).

and Quartus a brother-rather, "the" or "our brother"; as Sosthenes and Timothy are called (1Co 1:1; 2Co 1:1, Greek). Nothing more is known of this Quartus.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

16:21-24 The apostle adds affectionate remembrances from persons with him, known to the Roman Christians. It is a great comfort to see the holiness and usefulness of our kindred. Not many mighty, not many noble are called, but some are. It is lawful for believers to bear civil offices; and it were to be wished that all offices in Christian states, and in the church, were bestowed upon prudent and steady Christians.

Acts 19:22 And having sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
Acts 19:29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia.
Acts 20:4 And he was accompanied by Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.
1 Corinthians 1:14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,
2 Timothy 4:20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but Trophimus I left sick at Miletus. (NASB ©1995)
