(3) Thirdly, he warns them, that they are in each other's power, with regard to the body, so that they may not defraud one another.

People's New Testament

7:4 The wife hath not power of her own body, etc. Each sex here is put on exactly the same footing. The body of each belongs to the other, and cannot be yielded to other parties. The spirit of the passage not only forbids adultery, but polygamy.

Wesley's Notes

7:4 The wife - the husband - Let no one forget this, on pretence of greater purity.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

4. A paradox. She hath not power over her body, and yet it is her own. The oneness of body in which marriage places husband and wife explains this. The one complements the other. Neither without the other realizes the perfect ideal of man.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

7:1-9 The apostle tells the Corinthians that it was good, in that juncture of time, for Christians to keep themselves single. Yet he says that marriage, and the comforts of that state, are settled by Divine wisdom. Though none may break the law of God, yet that perfect rule leaves men at liberty to serve him in the way most suited to their powers and circumstances, of which others often are very unfit judges. All must determine for themselves, seeking counsel from God how they ought to act.

1 Corinthians 7:3 The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.
1 Corinthians 7:5 Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (NASB ©1995)
