GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) We need a chief priest who is holy, innocent, pure, set apart from sinners, and who has the highest position in heaven. King James Bible For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; American King James Version For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; American Standard Version For such a high priest became us, holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Bible in Basic English It was right for us to have such a high priest, one who is holy and without evil, doing no wrong, having no part with sinners, and made higher than the heavens: Douay-Rheims Bible For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Darby Bible Translation For such a high priest became us, holy, harmless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and become higher than the heavens: English Revised Version For such a high priest became us, holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Webster's Bible Translation For such a high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Weymouth New Testament Moreover we needed just such a High Priest as this--holy, guileless, undefiled, far removed from sinful men and exalted above the heavens; World English Bible For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Young's Literal Translation For such a chief priest did become us -- kind, harmless, undefiled, separate from the sinners, and become higher than the heavens, | | Geneva Study Bible {12} For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; (12) Another argument: There are required in an high priest innocency and perfect pureness, which may separate him from sinners, for whom he offers. The Levitical high priests are not found to be such, for they offer first for their own sins: but only Christ is such a one, and therefore the only true High Priest. People's New Testament 7:26 Such an high priest became us. We need just such a high priest; who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, one who hath no sins and is exalted above the heathen. He needs not to save himself, and hence is able to save. Wesley's Notes 7:26 For such an high priest suited us - Unholy, mischievous, defiled sinners: a blessed paradox! Holy - With respect to God. Harmless - With respect to men. Undefiled - With any sin in himself. Separated from sinners - As well as free from sin. And so he was when he left the world. And made - Even in his human nature. Higher than the heavens - And all their inhabitants. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary 26. such-as is above described. The oldest manuscripts read, "also." "For to US (as sinners; emphatical) there was also becoming (besides the other excellencies of our High Priest) such an High Priest." holy-"pious" (a distinct Greek word from that for holy, which latter implies consecration) towards God; perfectly answering God's will in reverent piety (Ps 16:10). harmless-literally, "free from evil" and guile, in relation to Himself. undefiled-not defiled by stain contracted from others, in relation to men. Temptation, to which He was exposed, left no trace of evil in Him. separate-rather, "separated from sinners," namely, in His heavenly state as our High Priest above, after He had been parted from the earth, as the Levitical high priest was separated from the people in the sanctuary (whence he was not to go out), Le 21:12. Though justifying through faith the ungodly, He hath no contact with them as such. He is lifted above our sinful community, being "made higher than the heavens," at the same time that He makes believers as such (not as sinners), "to sit together (with Him) in heavenly places" (Eph 2:6). Just as Moses on the mount was separated from and above the people, and alone with God. This proves Jesus is God. "Though innumerable lies have been forged against the venerable Jesus, none dared to charge Him with any intemperance" [Origen]. made-Jesus was higher before (Joh 17:5), and as the God-MAN was made so by the Father after His humiliation (compare Heb 1:4). higher than the heavens-for "He passed through [so the Greek] the heavens" (Heb 4:14). Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary 7:26-28 Observe the description of the personal holiness of Christ. He is free from all habits or principles of sin, not having the least disposition to it in his nature. No sin dwells in him, not the least sinful inclination, though such dwells in the best of Christians. He is harmless, free from all actual transgression; he did no violence, nor was there any deceit in his mouth. He is undefiled. It is hard to keep ourselves pure, so as not to partake the guilt of other men's sins. But none need be dismayed who come to God in the name of his beloved Son. Let them be assured that he will deliver them in the time of trial and suffering, in the time of prosperity, in the hour of death, and in the day of judgment. | |

2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 4:14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 1 Peter 2:22 WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; (NASB ©1995) |
